After a four week lay-off due to the festive break and frozen pitches, Josh Canning’s side were not firing on all cylinders especially in the 20 minutes or so either side of half time but they treated the spectators to some excellent try-scoring early on and then late in the game.
Three of their first four tries were from medium to long range with the first coming as early as the third minute. Tom Shorrock secured turnover possession on his own ten metre line which led to a break by Kian Carter. He drew the last defender before sending Brett Taylor in under the posts for a try which he comfortably converted.
Taylor doubled his tally 15 minutes later. Burntwood errors had allowed the visitors deep into their own 22 but another turnover saw Aidan Barker race away down the right wing to feed Taylor inside for a coast to coast score.
Three minutes later, Luke Rookyard fielded a Telford kick out of defence to instigate an attack finished off by Hal Gozukucuk with Taylor converting.
Another long range attack featuring Gozukucuk and Rookyard in the build up ended with Billy Fisher touching down wide on the right for the bonus point try.
Close to the half hour mark, Telford opened their account with a converted try. They already had penalty advantage but reacted quickest to a loose ball to score under the posts.
Both sides lost promising positions up to the break due to infringements or handling errors although Rookyard was close to a try in the left corner.
Telford had the better of the play early in the second period, helped by continued errors from the home side but their defence held and they turned the tide with another long range try. Turnover possession was fed to Connor Brighton who raced down the left wing before timing a good pass to Taylor who completed a hat trick of tries.
Play became fractious for a ten minute period around the hour mark. Jack Johnson received a yellow card for repeated penalties by his side and he was joined on the sideline by Taylor following a flashpoint on 62 minutes. Taylor received a yellow card but Telford lost a player to a red card in the incident.
The visitors made their extra man tell by stretching the home defence either way before crossing in the right corner to make it 31-12.
However, as the yellow cards returned, the final ten minutes belonged to the Burntwood. Gozukucuk went on a forceful run deep into the visitors’ 22 and when they infringed skipper Canning tapped and drove over for a try converted by Carter.
Rookyard set up the next try. He collected a kick out of defence on the visitors’ ten metre line and then stormed his way across field into the 22 before feeding Shorrock to score and Carter to convert.
Burntwood rounded off the afternoon with their eighth try and it was another cracker. A flowing move down the left flank ended with Johnson scoring near the posts. Taylor’s conversion gave him a 23 point haul for the match.
Burntwood 2nds fortunes away to 3rd placed Warley were in stark contrast to the 1st team. A fairly young line-up tried their best but the hosts’ size and experience told as they won 52-6. Alfie Broadhurst contributed the six points from two penalty goals.
This Saturday the 1sts are at home again as they welcome Newport (Salop) 2nds whilst life doesn’t get any easier for the 2nds as they travel in the opposite direction to face 2nd placed Newport (Salop) 3rds. The 3rds are hoping to play a club fixture away to Veseyans.
